Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: CABLE #11-12 artist Jamie McKelvie on SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1-2!
I still remember that evening very clearly. I was 12 years old, and I was impatiently waiting for my dad to come home. I'd sent him to the comic shop in the next town after work, with very specific instructions: he was bringing me back a copy of the brand new SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1. When he got back home I grabbed it and ran up to my room. I must've read it a good 10 times before bed.
Looking back at those first few issues now, I'm pleased to see they still hold up. SPIDER-MAN 2099 was the first series in the new 2099 line from Marvel, showing a dark, dystopian vision of the future Marvel universe. Issue 1 threw you right into the action, showing you a Marvel world that was both different (flying cars, holographic answering machines, genetically engineered superdrugs) and the same (Spider-Man's on the run from the cops again!). Soon we cut to this new Spider-Man, Miguel O'Hara, telling his origin to Lyla, his holographic assistant/housekeeper/answering machine. We learn over the next couple of issues that he's a geneticist for the Alchemax corporation who gains the proportional powers of a spider when an attempt to cure himself of a drug addiction caused by his boss goes wrong. Soon his alter-ego is on the run from the very company he works for.
As a 12-year-old I *loved* this new take on Spidey—there was an edge to it, and with an entirely new character and world you felt anything could happen. As an adult, I'm a sucker for this sort of science fiction—the Blade Runner-meets-Spidey feel of the book is just as fresh to me now. Definitely worth a look, especially as there's a new 2099 series on the way!
