The inverted symbol was a perversion of the symbol, hence evil. As far as I know, the most popular literary character to feature a Pentagram on his shield was Sir Gawain in [i:0fa9a8ae87]Sir Gawain and The Green Knight[/i:0fa9a8ae87]. And I doubt there'd be any similarities between evil Cap and Sir Gawain. In most cultures and literary works, a Pentagram is used to ward off evil or symbolize virtue.

The "evil" cap looks kinda like the cap in the [b:66e20fcb67][i:66e20fcb67]Almagram[/i:66e20fcb67][/b:66e20fcb67] marvel/dc crossover when him and superman combined and made "[b:66e20fcb67][i:66e20fcb67]Super Soldier[/i:66e20fcb67][/b:66e20fcb67]", i guess it's the shield n mask.
