Make Mine Muckle: Iron Man

German statue makers Muckle Mannequins perform a little alchemy by making Iron Man out of fiberglass!

Muckle Mannequins makes Marvel characters come to life…or at least a good facsimile of it. The German statue-makers have produced spot-on recreations of Spider-Man, Hulk and earlier versions of Iron Man based on the movies, but they didn’t stop there. The group moved on from individual movies to a group-wide series of fiberglass statues based on “Marvel’s The Avengers.” As such, they went back and remade Iron Man in celebration of the film. Stephan Lokotsch of Muckle's U.S. distributors Section 9 Entertainment gives the good word on what went into the creation of this new piece.

“The pose was dictated to a large degree by the notion that he had to be able to fit into an ensemble of the four Avengers characters we are producing based on the film, i.e. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk,” Lokotsch says of the 83-inch tall, 55 pound piece. “Besides that though, he had to also be a powerful presence by himself, without the other characters surrounding him.”

Iron Man will certainly be the shiniest and most technologically advanced looking one in the group of Avengers, but the creation of his statue followed the same methods as the others.

“The base is made out of fiberglass and painted in a drybrush system, to emulate the look of stone,” describes Lokotsch. “The armor is made from fiberglass and painted with a glitter-enhanced paint--according to Marvel Studios’ Style Guide.”

It's important to note that, while the armor looks exactly like it does in the film, you will not see a likeness or Robert Downey, Jr. under the helmet.

“Unfortunately, we could not go so far as to do that, for a variety of reasons,” notes Lokotsch. “Expenses being the first reason, as essentially, most collectors would likely keep him in the completely armored Iron Man version anyway, which would mean that the additional cost would be wasted on them. Another issue was timing. Given the fact that we were dealing with not one, but four characters and a relatively tight production schedule, we needed to stay focused on the task at hand. That said, I am hoping that, eventually, perhaps with ‘Iron Man 3’ we could plan on a statue with alternating heads, i.e. one with helmet and one without, or an intermediate version with open helmet on Tony Stark's head.”

Since this marks Muckle’s third Iron Man statue, the creators benefited from familiarity when dreaming up the latest piece.

“Given the history we have with the Iron Man character, combined with the fact that we were not tasked with a facial likeness of Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, I'd have to admit that Iron Man at this stage was probably the least challenging of the four,” remarks Lokotsch.

This particular statue will not come in a variant, but the armor depicted became very important to the group of pieces altogether.

“There are no variants and the decision for the final version was a little more tricky than usual in that it certainly had to work as a standalone piece, but, given the fact that ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ is an ensemble movie, we had to anticipate that some people might go for the entire team, so it had to work in that context also,” recalls Lokotsch. “That said, if demand for the character continues the way it has been, you may not have seen the last iteration yet.”

Speaking of iterations, Lokotsch went on to say that the possibility for other Avengers characters joining Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk may happen in the future.

“If consumer demand dictates it, we will absolutely delve back into the Avengers and do more, so fan feedback is always welcome and encouraged. Obviously, Nick Fury is also a strong contender for statue treatment, as are [Black Widow, Hawkeye and Agent Coulson]. Not to be vague, but I suppose, only time will tell.”

The Avengers-based Iron Man statue can be purchased from Muckle right now for $4,099.
