"Astonishing X-Men: Torn" now on DVD

One of the more recent additions to the team, the X-Men don’t fully trust Emma just yet…and her actions in “Torn” may prove why they shouldn’t! What’s Emma up to, and can the X-Men recover from her apparent betrayal?

Pick up Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s “Astonishing X-Men: Torn” DVD, available now from Marvel Knights Animation Shout! Factory, to find out, and in the meantime read on to learn more about the inimitable Ms. Frost!

Malevolent Past to Heroic(?) Present

Emma Frost made her villainous debut in the Marvel Universe during Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s UNCANNY X-MEN #129, where she was better referred to as the Hellfire Club’s White Queen. It wasn’t until NEW X-MEN #116 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely when she joined the X-Men, but as “Torn” shows, even her allegiance to them is rather questionable.

A Woman of Many Careers

Emma Frost faces her past in "Astonishing X-Men: Torn"

It’s safe to say that despite being a villain and hero over X-Men history, Frost joins the club of successful and financially prosperous mutants With that being said, do you know the various positions she’s held in the job world?

Frost was the Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Frost International, a multi-billion company focusing on building ships and aircraft carriers. Later on, she also became the Headmistress and Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees at Massachusetts Academy, a school known for its’ loyalty to the Hellfire Club.

Success and hard work seldom go unnoticed, and Frost’s certainly caught the eyes of the Hellfire Club. While working as a dancer, she became an ally of Sebastian Shaw. From there, she made herself known within the organization.

Eventually, she becomes the Co-Headmaster at Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, alongside Scott Summers/Cyclops, and in “Astonishing X-Men: Torn,” she teaches mutant students about ethics.

A Powerful Foe

Whether you trust Emma as a hero or not, you have to admit she has some ridiculously awesome powers. Apart from being able to manipulate brain functions with her psychic abilities, having super strength and the whole I-can-transform-my-body-into-diamond bit, this hero--or villain--has some special talents outside the mutant world as well!

She’s great at defense training and hand-to-hand combat, and she’s an expert technician. Frost practices electronic theory, and she knows how to build and tinker with devices that amplify different forms of energy.
