Thor: God of Thunder - First-Degree Surtur

In this preview, the thermostat gets cranked to hellish proportions as Thor enters Muspelheim, home to an angry fire demon!

Check your fire extinguishers, bust out that Nelly CD (you know you still have it) and unwrap your marshmallows...it's about to get hot in here.
So far from what we've seen in SEGA and Liquid Entertainment's "Thor: God of Thunder," our hammer-slinging hero has nearly frozen to death in Ymir's homeland of Nifelheim and practically gone granola in the lush forests of Vanaheim. What awaits him next, you ask? Is the third 'heim the charm? Only if you enjoy heatstroke.

"Muspelheim...this is our fire world," Liquid Art Director Bennie Terry teases ominously with a slightly oft-kilter grin. "Dangerous, hostile like Nifelheim, but obviously the opposite. You'll see hot lava and lots of architectural elements that incorporate it; the organic elements here [carry] architectural significance. And you'll especially want to watch out for the 'lavafalls.'"

You can probably guess which fiendish flame-thrower awaits the Thunder God in Muspelheim, but if you don't mind indulging us while we channel our inner Jessica Fletcher: Surtur they wrote! And with his Twilight sword in hand, he's been specially designed to be a pretty tough customer.

"With Surtur, we want to inflict pain on Thor," Lead Designer Rick Arroyo says while apparently prepping to cut his own WWE promo. "If I’m Surtur, I don't want to just hurt you; I want to destroy you, I want to rip you apart, I want to crush you. So we tried to keep it very titan-like, so when the player feels [these blows], they’re like 'Oh my god!' and panicking and shaking the controller. When you get crushed and get up, you're like, 'Okay…okay, this guy--this guy's a challenge here.'"

Luckily, it'’s a challenge that can be met with some careful maneuvering and enough electricity to make an entire Clone Saga's worth of Ben Franklins proud.

"We've designed a procedural lightning system where every bolt that comes down is unique," Terry reveals. "When it flashes there's a post process that happens against the environment that makes it fit in together, so it's not this artificial lightning that looks separate; it actually affects the environment. So Thor will go from a level-one 'wind tap' to level 2, which is Thor’s 'lightning god' power. He’ll charge that up and unleash holy hell on everyone around him, which is obviously a really Thor-like power. As for level 3? For now let's just say it only gets more powerful when we add additional elements to it, as well as allowing it to move around the environment instead of just staying local around Thor."

In other words, it’ll take more than muscle to overcome Muspelheim's master. Get ready to fight fire with fire!
