Can’t get enough Star-Lord, Gamora, or Drax? Then you’re in luck! Just announced at San Diego Comic-Con, a slew of video game news, featuring customizables, unlockables, and upgrades to celebrate the release of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1!
TQ Jefferson, Vice President of Games Production at Marvel explains, “We’re giving people as many opportunities to experience the Guardians as possible. We’ve got our mobile game, our MMO, our Facebook title, our console game and ‘Disney Infinity 2.0.’ There’s going to be Guardians somewhere.”
“The Guardians of the Galaxy theatrical release will introduce a new Marvel franchise to a global audience; these characters will be featured prominently in many of Marvel’s most popular games,” says Peter Phillips, EVP/GM, Marvel Interactive & Digital Distribution. “We believe that great characters and stories make for great games, and with the Guardians of the Galaxy we are bringing this philosophy to life across Marvel’s digital platforms."
Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon Trailer
First up, “Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon,” available now in the iTunes and Google Play stores. Bring the power of the Guardians into your mobile device as you help them track down five pieces of the Universal Weapon before it falls into the wrong hands!
“A great thing is that we’ve gotten Dan Abnett, who’s written a bulk of Guardians of the Galaxy comic books over the years, to pen the story,” Jefferson says. “You can go two panels in and see the humor and how the characters relate to one another. It all shines through.
“Another cool thing is that it’s a premium mobile game, but there’s no in-app purchase, you don’t have to be connected to the internet to play it, we just wanted people to be able to buy it and get right into the game without any hidden fees.”
Disney Infinity: Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer
With “Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes,” the team unveiled for the first time that new playable villains, including Ronan the Accuser, were coming to the game!
“One of the great things about the Marvel Play Sets in ‘Disney Infinity’ is that they’ve been written by Brian Michael Bendis,” notes Jefferson. “He’s written years of the Avengers, written more Spider-Man than Stan Lee, and is currently writing the Guardians books. It’s really exciting having a talent of his level on-board with one of these games.”
Marvel: Avengers Alliance SDCC 2014 Trailer
“Marvel: Avengers Alliance” announced during the Marvel Games Panel that the next Spec Op will feature a brand new story by writer Alex Irvine and focus on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” characters and villains as seen in the film! Dive into the action with the millions of social gamers and Marvel fans who have already joined S.H.I.E.L.D. by playing “Marvel: Avengers Alliance” on Facebook.
“The story that people have been experiencing in the game has been leading up to cosmic events which will allow the Guardians to come into play,” Jefferson says. “You’re going to see all of the primary Guardians square off against Ronan and Nebula. We’re very excited to roll that Spec Op out and let people enjoy the Guardians on Facebook.”
Marvel Heroes 2015 Trailer
In “Marvel Heroes,” players will join Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot as the “Guardians of the Galaxy” premiere approaches! Also written by critically-acclaimed comic-scribe Brian Michael Bendis, and led by the creative visionaries behind Diablo and Diablo II, “Marvel Heroes 2015” remains the only online action RPG that’s set in the iconic Marvel Universe.
“The Guardians are finally being introduced and you’ll see them as either playable characters or team-up characters,” reveals Jefferson. “What that means is that if you have a character like Rocket, part of your ‘skill tree,’ no pun intended, will be to summon Groot for a super attack.”
Marvel War of Heroes SDCC 2014 Trailer
“Marvel: War of Heroes” announced its in-game raid boss events for August, September, and October. In honor of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” release, the game will be doing a special September raid boss event focused on the movie where players can use “Guardians of the Galaxy” characters and more from the Marvel Universe!
Jefferson explains: “The raid event is centered around the events of the film. Expect to see Ronan, expect to see Nebula, and expect to see a whole new series of cards based on the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Marvel Pinball: Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer
The heroes from Guardians of the Galaxy will soon be joining Marvel Pinball! “Guardians of the Galaxy Pinball” brings all five members of the galaxy’s greatest crew of warriors to their pinball universe as they combat Ronan the Accuser. Beginning with a four-ball multi-ball as players escape the Kyln, the Guardians of the Galaxy pinball table starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up. The table showcases the individual strengths of each member of the team, including Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and the group’s wild card, Rocket Raccoon, as well as landmark battles from the comics and film, including fights against Yondu and the Ravagers, Nebula, and Ronan himself.
“You’d never think that pinball tables can be as advanced, exciting, or dynamic until you see these pinball tables,” promises Jefferson. “You’re going to see Star-Lord walking around on the table; you’ll see Ronan swinging the Universal Weapon around, you’ll see the Milano right in the middle, of the table. It’s an amazing experience and the fact that Zen Studios have been able to pack so much into the pinball table, it’s something I never expected to see.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy will also be coming to Minecraft, and they are not alone. The Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Skin Pack brings some of the most cosmically powerful characters in the Marvel Universe together on Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.
“You’re going to see all the Guardians from the film, but we’re also digging into the bench with characters,” says Jefferson. “You’ll see Charlie 27 in there, you’ll see Wraith, you’ll see fan favorites. What’s amazing to me is the definition you can get out of the pixelated art style. In this age of hyper-realistic fidelity, Minecraft stands out. At first, you might be concerned if Star-Lord is recognizable as Star-Lord or will Rocket be recognizable as Rocket, and when you see it, you have no concerns and see that the Minecraft folks know exactly what they’re doing.”
Marvel fans will soon be able to customize their Xbox LIVE Avatars with exclusive costumes from the upcoming film. Players on XBOX One or XBOX 360 can become their favorite “Guardians of the Galaxy” characters. Be a part of the upcoming movie and share the passion with other fans through XBOX Live.
“For people who like to dress up their avatars, we’ll have a number of outfits; the Nova Corpsmen outfits, Star-Lord’s outfit, and different props,” says Jefferson.
