As a young girl Bethany Cabe married Alexander van Tilberg, an ambitious German junior ambassador to the United States. Bethany was forced to watch as their marriage dissolved due to his inability to make time for them over his career. This situation only worsened as he turned to drugs to handle the stress, which he place upon himself. Bethany was unable to standby helplessly watching as he continued to destroy his life any further, so she decided to leave him. A short time later, Tilberg was seemingly killed in a horrific car crash. Bethany felt extremely guilty, believing that the accident was the result of her neglecting to help her husband through his problems. She had no way of knowing that the truth was that he had been kidnapped by a hostile foreign power.
