The world's most multi-talented super hero, Griffin Gogol was an ordinary plumber until his fateful meeting with an extraordinary client. Gogol had just fixed an elderly psychologist's sink, but the old man claimed he couldn't afford to pay Griffin's fee. The psychologist offered to cure Gogol's smoking habit via hypnosis instead, and the plumber agreed; however, as Gogol later discovered, the psychologist was secretly an extraterrestrial, and the hypnosis unlocked Gogol's innate superhuman potential. Griffin never learned why his mysterious alien benefactor had empowered him, but he decided to make the most of it. Donning a staggeringly gaudy costume, Gogol became the super hero Captain Ultra; however, his subconscious fear of success manifested as severe pyrophobia (fear of fire), handicapping his efforts. For instance, when the criminal Frightful Four advertised for a new fourth member, Ultra apparently misunderstood the ad and auditioned, but they rejected him after he fainted at the sight of a lit match.
