Heya gang, just a quick note for when you're creating disambiguation pages, and that is to please list the characters that used a given codename in chronological order, ie first user of codename to most recent. Thanks! --ComiX-Fan 23:24, 11 July 2006 (EDT)
This is great stuff! To all those who've contributed disambiguation pages, keep up the excellent work! :) --ComiX-Fan 06:04, 13 July 2006 (EDT)
For the disambiguation (dab) pages, if a character has had more than one alias, do we have a preference as far as which picture should be used? Obviously, I assume that if an image of that character using that alias has been uploaded, then we should use it. However, what if no picture is currently available for that character as that alias? For example, what about Atlas (Erik Josten)'s previous aliases Power Man and Smuggler? Is it better to use the Atlas picture or none at all? --Lonesome Pinky 23:21, 31 July 2006 (EDT)
A discussion of this was carried out here. The consensus is that the best solution is to upload images of the character in the correct costume for that alias, which will soon be done for Erik Josten's various aliases. --Lonesome Pinky 14:04, 1 January 2007 (CST)
I've been absent from here for about a month and in that time, I see that the policy regarding disambiguation pages has changed. I can't find much mention of this, but in the interest of enlightening anyone else who was as confused as me, there was some discussion of this change here. To whit, for certain characters (major? minor? some? all?), the basic link (no parentheticals) for an alias which has been used by multiple characters should redirect to the profile of the most popular, well-known character with that alias. For example, Spider-Man redirects to Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and the Green Goblin redirects to Green Goblin (Norman Osborn). Currently existant disambiguation pages should be moved to "Character (disambiguation)", e.g., Green Goblin (disambiguation). Again, I don't know if this applies to all characters or only certain ones. Also, I don't know whose responsibility it is to move these pages. Additionally, I'm not sure who is the ultimate arbiter of "most popular" when it comes to lesser known characters. I suppose it would be Pete and the admins.
This is all well and good, and, I daresay, probably the least cumbersome and confusing method, especially for visitors who just, say, want to read the profile of Spider-Man. That said, I share Wezqu's concern that the disambiguation pages will be lost in the shuffle. After such great effort went into pointing all links away from the disambiguation pages, the newly renamed "Character (disambiguation)" pages should all be orphans. And I doubt any new user is going to do a search for such an unwieldly name. Since people put a lot of effort into making these disambiguation pages clear and useful, I think it would be a shame for them to be buried within the Wiki. True, they are all listed here in this category. However, I think it might be helpful if a link pointing to a character's disambiguation page was included, say, at the bottom of the main profile. It could say something like "For other people who have used this alias, see Character (disambiguation)."
Overall, I support this change. If we can address the above concern and clarify the policy (here or in the Help namespace), I think we will have made the Marvel Universe Wiki much easier to use by casual user. --Lonesome Pinky 22:50, 8 April 2007 (EDT)
