Ch’od was a member of the Saurid race, which were amphibious beings having both gills and lungs, allowing them to breath air above and below water. They possessed a humanoid appearance and were able to communicate with other beings. At some point he became a captive in the slave pits of the Shi’ar, and met the earthling Christopher Summers (Corsair) and three other aliens that had been imprisoned for valorous crimes against the Shi’ar as well; a Lupin named Cr+eee, a Mephitisoid whom Summers nicknamed Hepzibah (as her true name was unpronounceable by those that were not of her own species), and a Shi'ar cyborg named Raza. Together they escaped and stole a starship, which they named the Starjammer, and they took the name of the Starjammers. The group began engaging in acts of piracy against Shi'ar vessels, thus taking vengeance on the Shi'ar but taking care not to harm innocent passengers in the process. The Starjammers quickly came to be regarded as outlaws by the Shi'ar Empire.
