The early history of Contrary is shrouded in mystery. Through unexplained consequences she gained access to the weapons and technology of the subterranean Fire People. It is believed that she is the estranged nurse known as Wetware Mary. In the guise of Wetware Mary she exposed various children in the hospital to a "wetware/nanotech virus". Many of these children would become Ultras. Contrary has used her powers to manipulate the minds of others, her powers are most effective on men. She controlled the Academy of the New Elite and was opposed by the members of Freex. Contrary along with Hardcase formed UltraForce to battle warlord Atalon and the Fire People.
