Joe Ledger was an astronaut working for NASA when he found the wrecked ship of an alien Skrull. When Joe saved the Skrull's life, he was awarded with the Power Prism, an energy synthesizer the Skrulls had created. Using the Power Prism, he became the superhero Doctor Spectrum. Soon, he became one of the founding members of the Super hero team the Squadron Supreme. During his tenure on the team, he encountered the Superhero teams from another Earth The Avengers and The Defenders. After the Squadron was possessed by the Overmind, Doctor Spectrum was one of the heroes who voted to implement a Utopia Society for America. Soon after the project began Doctor Spectrum was sent to find the wayward teammate Nuke, who he accidentally killed in battle. After accidentally killing his fellow friend and teammate, Doctor Spectrum vows to never use the Power Prism in combat again, however he later brakes this vow to save the lives of his teammates. When the Squadron began using Behavior Modification technology on their enemies, Doctor Spectrum developed a relationship with his new teammate Foxfire. However, this was not to last; during the battle with America's Redeemers, Foxfire killed Nighthawk, and was killed herself by The Mink. It was after this tragedy and a battle with the Black Archer that Joe Ledger found out he could still use his powers, despite the destruction of the Power Prism.
