(Super Soldiers) Vol 1 #1

Joseph Hauer's life before he was subjected to a super soldier program is unknown. He entered into a program similar to the Weapon Plus program which created various Superhumans over the years. It was Dr. Khan that gave Hauer a genetically altered organ to control his moods and increase his fighting ability by producing a drug. This drug manifested itself in Red, White, and Blue forms. "Red" improved his performance in combat, "White" brought him back down, and "Blue" kept him calm and relaxed once it was over. Hauer, along with other British Super-Soldiers were run by the Cabinet Office and answered only to the prime minister. At one point, a superhuman named "Nuke" ended up becoming deranged due to his enhancements. This lead to him actually fighting against both Daredevil and Captain America. This resulted both in the death of Nuke, and the cancellation of the British Super-Soldier program. Immediately following the cancellation, Joseph Hauer was placed in suspended animation. Later, Captain Joseph Hauer awoke from a cryogenic tube at the biological warfare research centre in England with no memory of who he was. While escaping from the facility, Hauer raided the armory and commandeered the vehicle of Sarah Wilde--a journalist. After blasting his way through a military blockade, his new journalist friend took him to see Doctor Javed Khan. Dr. Khan started to fill in the gaps in Hauer's memory; however, a fellow British Super-Soldier--who had become addicted to the "Red" drug--named Lee Childs (aka Revenge) barged in with a group of soldiers and killed Dr. Khan. Luckily, Hauer and Wilde were able to escape.

Afterward, Captain Hauer traveled with Sarah Wilde to find the Super-Soldier Control Centre from Khan's notes. With Sarah's help, they were able to hack into the records and fill in all the remaining gaps in Hauer's memory.

Later, Hauer and Wilde traveled to Thailand to a Buddhist temple where a fellow British Super-Soldier named Alec Dalton (aka Dauntless) had been nursed back to health. (He had succeeded in breaking his programing, and had learned to control his "Red" and "White" moods through the teachings of the Buddhist monks.) Meanwhile, Henry Gyrich had sent the U.S. Agent to capture Major Hauer, telling him that Hauer was a communist traitor. This led to a battle between U.S. Agent attacked Hauer, or at least until they both ended up being attacked by an outside organization of soldiers. Realizing he had been lied to, U.S. Agent joined with Major Hauer and Dauntless in fighting against them. After quickly winning the fight, one of the soldiers named Gog (Owen Llewellyn) was lfet alive. The team was able to both remove the implant in Gog and break his conditioning. Therefore, Major Hauer quickly recruited him for a raid on the headquarters of those that attacked them. (Click on the highlighted names above to learn about the characters.)

Afterward, taking U.S. Agent's Quinjet, Hauer led his team (Gog, U.S. Agent, Dauntless, and Wilde) to an old safe house in order to hack into the computers. While there, they learned that the group that attacked them was protected by A.I.M. So, U.S. Agent contacted "another super soldier" friend of his to help them. As they infiltrated the headquarters of their enemies, Hauer separated from the team in order to reach the top floor. Sarah tagged along to get her story; however, they ran into Revenge and he shot Sarah. Now, literally seeing "Red," the enraged Hauer attacked Revenge using his signature adamantium combat knife, and threw him out the window. Still in his "Red" mode, Hauer ended finding the boss of the organization, Sir Marcus, and threatened to kill him. But, when U.S. Agents "super soldier friend" named Captain America, showed up, Major Hauer decided he could not kill in cold blood, as that would make him no better than Revenge. Later on, Hauer and his companions were recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture the Warlord, Huang Zhu (who was working with HYDRA, and hosting a martial arts tournament in the Savage Land.) S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Super-Soldiers broke up the HYDRA operation. As a result of this adventure, the Super-Soldiers gained three new members: Dragonfly (Andre LeRoux), Guvnor, and Xantia. (To learn about the teams, place, and/or characters above, just click on their highlighted names.)

For a long time, Major Hauer and his Super-Soliders had not been seen or heard from. However, more recently, Joseph Hauer was seen alongside other British superheroes (Pete Wisdom, Captain Britain, and Union Jack) who were being briefed on the details of the British Superhuman Registration Act by Contessa Valentina Allegra di Fontaine, Alistaire Stuart, and Lance Hunter.
