In beginning, it was revealed that Thanos was not happily exiled to the planet he escaped to after the Infinity Gauntlet event, and had instead built a sophisticated surveillance headquarters in his small farming hut. Through the use of this equipment he discovered that the universe was in danger, and so he left his planet of exile to investigate. Galactus was also shocked to find that Eternity itself was comatose.

At the same time, on Earth, legions of super heroes were being attacked by twisted clones, or doppelgangers, of themselves. Unbeknownced to the general super hero populace, the clones which managed to subdue their real versions took the place of their doubles and continued along, pretending to be unaffected.

Eventually, it was discovered that the cause of everything was actually the Magus, the purged, evil side of Adam Warlock. Despite being believed dead, the Magus returned in order to collect the Infinity Gems to make the Infinity Gauntlet and reverse the decision made by the Living Tribunal that they would never be used together again.

Back on Earth, a large collection of super heroes gathered together at Four Freedoms Plaza to discuss what to do about the doppelgangers. However, the main speaker for the group, Reed Richards, turned out to be a replacement doppelganger himself, and despite the efforts of both Daredevil and Wolverine, who could each sense that he was fake, he detonated a gamma bomb on top of the tour, and destroyed the top few floors, leaving a crater where the giant 4s were. Luckily, the heroes were saved at the last moment, and reluctantly gathered together with Adam Warlock and Thanos to stop the Magus.

The Magus succeeded in his plan to gain the Infinity Gauntlet, along with the six gems, and before the legion of heroes could stop him, he exercised the immense power of the gauntlet to trap them all, leaving only Adam Warlock to stop him. The final confrontation began, as Warlock and his evil side fought on a galactic scale, yet because Thanos and Warlock had secretly replaced the reality gem with a copy, the Magus eventually lost the fight.

Defeated, the Magus was banished to the Soul World within Adam Warlock’s soul gem, the heroes returned to Earth, and Thanos went back to his isolated planet to farm and consider that maybe Adam Warlock’s good side, the Goddess, might in fact be the more dangerous threat.
