Once a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent until she was left out in the cold when they were temporarily disbanded, Mercedes became a rogue agent gathering intel on criminal organizations for Nick Fury. She runs a S.H.I.E.L.D front called the Org and employs Taskmaster as her field agent. Her venture forces her to work on both sides of the law, and it was only a matter of time before others wanted to take control of her operation. Several agents from various secret societies banded together in the Minions' International Liberation Front under the leadership of Red Shirt to take the Org down. Forging a bounty on Taskmaster's head Red Shirt brought Mercedes into the open, and she posed as a waitress to get close to the target. Together she and Taskmaster risked life and limb to find the secret base of the Org, but Mercedes only played along in order to help Taskmaster recover his lost memories of their time spent as husband and wife. She was nearly tortured by members of the Inquisition, almost killed by the Don of the Dead, shot by Taskmaster and pummeled by Red Shirt, but she got what she wanted for a few short moments: Taskmaster remembered who she truly was to him. Mercedes lost her husband again as his powers overrode her memory when he absorbed a portion of Red Shirt's Shi'ar fighting style in order to defeat him, and she had to make a quick escape before the Secret Avengers raided her base. She told Steve Rogers she would continue her work, supplying him with information but would not come in personally. Mercedes explained this was the only way to be close to her husband, and she was not going to abandon him the way he did to her.
