While attempting to avoid capture by their pursuers Cap'n Reptyl and Primo, Raptra informed Quoi that she navigated a course into a dark patch of space known as the Rot, because she thought it was a good place to hide. Raptra was unaware that the Rot was an actual sentient being, although, Quoi was able to sense that the Rot was alive, after they entered into it.

Reptyl and Primo were informed by an unknown agent that going into the Rot was suicide. The Avengers also noticed the hole, which was growing in space. Mantis and Vision consulted Eternity for any help that he could provide against the cancer in space, but he revealed that he had no affect over the Rot. Mentor, Starfox, and several Eternals of Saturn were consumed by the Rot as they pursued their assailants into its dark grasp.

It was later discovered that Rot was the child of the "Mad Titan" Thanos and the conceptual being Death. Although they are not known to have copulated, Rot was conceived at the time of Thanos' death, when all of his energies were released and merged with the energy of Death, creating the being known as Rot. At its time of conception Rot was a mere speck, so small that Death did not even recognize its existence. Death revealed that due to it being so alien, she had no control over Rot.
