Howard Stark was a brilliant scientist and ruthless businessman, who made Stark Industries a world leader in technology. An alcoholic, Howard treated his son Tony harshly, disappointed by his lack of direction, but was able to cultivated Tony’s intelligence.
Howard and his wife Maria died in a car crash, apparently the result of faulty brakes arranged by business competitors from Republic Oil & Gas (later Roxxon Energy Corporation). Their death inspired Tony to take both business and engineering seriously.
