While serving aboard Sir Richard Reed's ship the 'Fantastick' John, along with Captain Benjamin Grimm, Susan Storm and Sir Richard Reed, encountered a strange curtain of light. The ship's crew, fearing for their lives, had already abandoned ship. However, the John and his three companions remained with the ship as it drifted through the Fantastick energies. The light altered his body, giving him power over flame.
