Stuart: Thanks for the recent assist in deleting my use of a category for my own bio. I wondered why I appeared in the general "People" listings! You guys do a fabulous job keeping track of all that goes on. Sorry for adding to your hassles -- but I'm learning quickly. :-) -- IronHube 22:10, 11 April 2007
"Not sure what happened to your credits on the contributions list. If you hadn't said the edits had been approved, I would have said that someone else has made an edit and then approved it, which does wipe unapproved edits credits. Are you sure they were approved? If you are currently able to have your posts show without waiting for approval from a moderator, then even though your post shows, it hasn't been approved yet, and a subsequent edit might theoretically wipe your credit. If it's not that, then I'm stumped, and you need to ask Pete.-- Stuart Vandal"
That has happened to me on a couple of occasions, I don't really mind, just thought you should know its not just him.--Viper
"Yesterday you wiped clean the Captain America entry, removing the entire text. Stopping people doing silly things like that is why most people cannot post without being moderated. I'm going to reinstate the profile, but be MUCH more careful in the future.--Stuart Vandal"
Are you sure that was me, I only added some links to the text, If it was me then It was unintentional and I apologize --Viper
Stuart, I responded to your message on my user talk page. I didn't use Wikipedia as a source, it's the other way around. I created the entry at http://marveldatabase.com using information from my fansite, http://geocities.com/dakota_north_ny, which was created using the actual issues in which the character appears.
Understood, and apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick. Stuart Vandal
Thank you for correcting me. It will not happen again. And I will try to locate pictures which are not fanbased and that i get permission from.
I don't need to have my posts approved anymore!!! But this doesn't mean I have to approve other people's does it? If so is there an FAQ or something? cactusrob 18:10, 16 April 2006 (EDT)
It means you've gained enough Hero Points to be trusted to post unmoderated. While in theory you can approve other people's posts, you should be very careful in doing so; while you can post without requiring approval, that's not the same as being one of the moderators (something some of the other "high end" posters don't seem to have grasped). Only approve another's edits if you are really certain that what they have posted is correct (content, spelling, etc); if in any doubt whatsoever, leave it to one of the moderators. You've also got to be careful; you can easily overwrite posts waiting for approval, because you get auto-approved; try to avoid doing so, as you might be wiping out someone else's good post, something you wouldn't want done to you. And remember, being allowed to post without approval is a privilege, because you've proved you can make good posts; don't get lax, because now you have to maintain that standard without us always double checking it. But all those words of caution aside, well done. I don't think there is a FAQ yet, but it's a good idea for one to be set up, and when I or another of the moderators get a chance, we'll do so. Stuart Vandal 18:51, 16 April 2006 (EDT)
I definitely do not have enough knowledge or the resources needed to check up on other peoples entries, so I'll just carry on like I do. Thanks for the help. However, I just need to know is there a way of seeing if there is a post needing approval on pages so I don't accidentaly wipe over a mojar edit while doing my little ones? cactusrob 19:28, 16 April 2006 (EDT)
Assuming it works for you the same way it does for me, then if you are logged in and on "Recent changes" then it will have "This Revision" highlighted in red if it is awaiting approval. If you go direct to a page, go to the history section and compare the most recent edits to the the page proper - if the page that you first accessed doesn't match the most recent version in the history, then that revision is awaiting approval. Stuart Vandal 20:04, 16 April 2006 (EDT)
I am sorry, I did not mean for anyone to react like that, I was just saying things that I should not have. marvels 14:22, 17 April 2006 (EDT)
There has been more than one Werewolf, shouldn't Werewolf be listed under "Werewolf (Jack Russell)" or would it be "Werewolf By Night"? And how should his sister (Vampire By Night) be listed under? --DragynWulf 22:12, 18 April 2006 (EDT)
Since the upcoming civil war tie in Black Panther #18 is coming out soon I was planning on adding some text about it, anyway do you mind if I add an image to go along with it for both the Storm and Black Panther bios (just temporary), since I got fussed at the last time I replaced an existing image not of my uploading I thought I would ask one of my OHOTMU friends first. So, can I? --Viper 21:17, 19 April 2006 (EDT)
You don't look at your user talk much do you? Anyway, since you were restoring credits for DragynWulf (I think that's spelled right), I thought you could restore my credit on the Vulcan bio, I usually don't mind about credits but Gab's one of my favorite characters and it does seem right not to have any credit when I created it. Hope I'm not troubling you. Thanks --Viper 02:17, 23 April 2006 (EDT)
I do, I just don't always have time to spend replying. It wasn't me who restored DW's credits, but I have no problem helping you restore yours, just not right now, as I'm in the middle of deadlines. If one of the other mods doesn't do it beforehand, I'll sort it out when I get time. Stuart Vandal 02:50, 23 April 2006 (EDT)
Ok, I'm in no hurry, whenever you get the time to help is fine with me. Maybe it was Mike that helped DW, I can't remember, man, I'm like an old senile guy trapped in a teenager's body. Good luck with your deadlines --Senile Old Fart 03:36, 23 April 2006 (EDT)
Hey um is there something wrong with those bio's (Stegron and Stonewall)? bc if there is I can rewrite them. And i'm a huge fan of demogoblin and usagent if you need anyone to rewrite thier bios or edit them.
Stegron and Demogoblin were both very close if not identical in places to the profiles written at Spiderfan.org. The image of Stegron was poor quality. Their profiles need to be redone.--MikeFichera 12:45, 24 April 2006 (EDT)
I'll report anymore senseless edits I come across, I just thought you guys were to busy to have to read my complaints about random users. About the Psylocke image, I'm pretty sure it had been up for a pretty long time and it had text on it which the posting guidelines say is a no no. --Viper 18:16, 15 May 2006 (EDT)
We are never too busy (learn the different spellings of to, and when to use which please) to deal with someone deliberately messing up profiles. As for the Psylocke image (1) this site has been up only for a few months, so the longest it has been up is that time - clearly your idea of a "pretty long time" and my idea differ somewhat; (2) you are "pretty sure" it had been up for a long time, meaning YOU DIDN'T KNOW, but just felt like changing it; (3) the text on it is a miniscule artist's signature, that I had to actively look for to spot, so don't use that as an excuse, not when you were also changing the images on several other profiles. The truth is, you found another image you thought looked cool, and with complete disregard to the warnings you've had umpteen times about not changing images without cause, you just did what you felt like. Enough of doing that, OKAY? Stuart Vandal 19:06, 15 May 2006 (EDT)
Yep, Impatience is one of my many flaws (I know the different spellings of too, it was a typo). I'll put all of my willpower on the doing what I feel like with blatant disregard for rules or warnings thing, promise. --Viper 20:20, 15 May 2006 (EDT)
That's a real productive attitude you've got going there, Viper. --ComiX-Fan 08:52, 18 May 2006 (EDT)
I don't want to sound snarky, but I've recently acquired some information pertaining your decision to remove my Psylocke image. The user emmafrostfan uploaded the image Psylock.png on the 25 of February 2006, it was the original image for the Psylocke bio, and basically identical to my image, until it was replaced by the user split0's image (Xmen unlimited.jpg) on the 14 of March 2006. So, I replaced an image that replaced the original with virtually the same image as the original. Just thought you should know. --Viper 20:17, 16 May 2006 (EDT)
You told me to report it to you if senseless edits were being submitted. Currently, captainavenger is making such edits.--Viper 00:23, 16 May 2006 (EDT)
I stated my reasons for replacing the image when I replaced the image, for some reason it didn't show up with the edit. Which I will repeat: The image was copied from wikipedia.com, someone else colored the image for wikipedia, when the image was uploaded to MU I enlarged the image and put it in the bio (not knowing it was a wikipedia image). It is also not to the recommended size, image (405px), recommended size (442px). I didn't replace the image because I found a new image that has just taken my fancy. You should also read my latest submission above for "The hunk and senseless edits". --Viper 20:55, 17 May 2006 (EDT)
On the Captain Britain image, if it was taken from Wikipedia then yes, it should come down (though it would help if we could know when and who - first, it may well have been the person who modified the image who uploaded to both sites, and second, we have had instances of people copying FROM here TO Wikipedia). Recommended size or not, the image was otherwise fine. And the lack of explanation as to why it got changed is exactly why I removed your change. As for the Psylocke image, I stand by what I said; you may have found new information subsequently to try and retroactively give yourself reason to change the image, but since you didn't know that at the time of changing the image, that's not the reason you changed it. You simply wanted to change the image for the sake of changing the image. Stuart Vandal 03:51, 18 May 2006 (EDT)
Do you know if we can do profiles on Nth Man and Alfie O'Meagan from the Nth Man series??? Or are those non-Marvel properties? And if we were able to do profiles on them what would their reality designation be? -- IRISH4869 07:55, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
I'm fairly sure Nth Man and Alfie are Marvel properties, and thus fair game. Not certain on their reality designation - I suspect Earth-898, but I'd have to verify that. Stuart Vandal 08:08, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
Why would you think it Earth-898? What's Earth-898? -- IRISH4869 08:14, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
August '89, when Nth Man first appeared. Stuart Vandal 08:26, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
The only thing I got wrong was the year on the first appearance (98 not 97) and Mole Man's first name (His first name is Harvey his middle name is Rupert, and this was the series where it was revealed). I would qualify the Mole Man as an "other member" of the group. If you re-read the series I think you'll see moments which may cause you to agree with me. Not an actual member, but someone who was of consequence to the team (sorta). I'm not going to change it back. It doesn't matter that much. As to it being devoid of information, I was starting the page before anyone else could, and i was going to fill in the info when I had all of my resources together. I figured if I at least had a roster it would be something (I also plan on doing an original page forr Zawadi). And y'know I never heard anyone tell me what an awesome job I did with the original Squadron Supreme. I am especially proud of the Power Princess entry, most of which was original (I did steal some lines from her entry in OHOTMU '89 and I got the stats from OHOTMUME). -- IRISH4869 08:05, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
"I changed the year on the first appearance. Didn't catch that one didja Stuart?" "The only thing I got wrong was the year on the first appearance (98 not 97)" I can't be expected to catch ALL your mistakes. :)
"I would qualify the Mole Man as an "other member" of the group." He constantly tried to accompany them, and they constantly rejected him. That's hardly a qualification for membership. If being rejected counts, Spider-Man's been a member of the FF since Amazing Spider-Man #1.
"Not an actual member" - then he's not a member, and shouldn't be listed as one.
"I was starting the page before anyone else could" - see, that's part of why I ragged on you. You seem obsessed with claiming credit for starting pages, and rather than let anyone else steal the perceived glory of doing so, you'll happily do a half-baked job (or in this case, barely warmed the oven) just so no one else gets in ahead of you.
"I never heard anyone tell me what an awesome job I did with the original Squadron Supreme" - I can't check every entry you do, and frankly, if you want praise, then you aren't helping your case with your attitude. And before you claim to have no attitude, "I have an Australian foe and an English foe on this board." Stuart Vandal 08:26, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
And here I thought you guys didn't pay attention to lil ol me. Everyone has an attitude (although mine is apparently "lousy", which is a very judgemental statement), I just have an antagonistic sense of humor. Besides, you don't know who I'm referencing there. It could be ANYONE!! And you did "rag" on me first today (your word). I start profiles when I think about it, then I go get my issues when I have the chance and write the profiles. Sometimes I just copy or adapt old handbook entries because I don't have the necesary issues to write an original, and the character needs to be added. All of the profiles I've done are not that way. Now some of my first ones are "half baked or barely warmed" because I was trying to throw enough out there to get the points so I could approve my own stuff. That plan worked out well actually. I am really going to go to town when I get my What If?? issues back. I'm a big fan of alternate realities, and I don't mind admitting I felt dumb when you told me how you came up with Nth Man's reality (I should have figured it out from 616 years ago *Slaps hand on forehead*). I do plan on finishing my old profiles when I have the chance, I just need to get my longboxes out of storage (I've been traveling alot the past few months, and I'm moving so they'll be there for awhile.) I would say most of my entries are done from trades, old handbooks, current issues, and memory. And I don't feel there is a "glory" in creating it first. I just want to create the characters I like before anyone else can (although with Iron Man it was just up for grabs. I was shocked when you guys hadn't created a profile for him or Captain America when i first got on here). -- IRISH4869 09:29, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
I do have a REAL question about updates on profiles though. When is it too soon to update a profile? I have been trying to keep the Exiles updated (well the Exiles page and Power Princess) within a week of the issues. I was updating the Horsemen of Apocalypse and went ahead and changed the roster to reflect the comics. Was it too soon?? I wouldn't want to spoil someone's read because they were trying to get some background info before they began a storyline. -- IRISH4869 09:29, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
I recommend waiting until a story arc has finished, then adding a summary of it to the profiles of characters/teams/events/locations involved. --ComiX-Fan 21:04, 19 May 2006 (EDT)
I saw a sneak preview of next weeks handbook. What reality did this story really take place on?? This story cannot be in 616 continuity. It doesn't fit at all. The vikings killed thousands of new yorkers, and the mayor and it is NEVER mentioned again??? How could this still be in 616? Not to mention the differences in Thor's and Doctor Strange's costumes. There is NO way that this could have happened without ever being mentioned in another comic again unless it was a What If type scenario. While I'm on it, the MAX Fury story should also not be integrated into continuity. Both Dum Dum and Nick Fury are completely unlike what they were shown to be before and after that series. It doesn't fit into continuity AT ALL. I feel that some MAX series should be considered their own realities just like U.S. War Machine. What are your feelings on this? -- IRISH4869 01:07, 25 May 2006 (EDT)
While I haven't read that story, and didn't write the entry, it seems that the consensus was that the Vikings story took place on 616. Lack of subsequent mention doesn't disqualify that, as New York gets hammered by invaders several times a year, and the locals don't make a big song and dance afterwards - I guess they've just gotten used to it. Costume variations also don't disqualify it either - people change their clothes all the time. Stuart Vandal 07:15, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
Is it appropiate to ask a mod to look over created bios to see if they're approvable? Or is it better to just wait until someone sees it? Especially the ones that are on the wanted list, and probably don't get seen much. PseudoSherlock 16:43, 5 June 2006 (EDT)
You can ask a mod if you think your edits are getting lost in the crowd. Stuart Vandal 07:15, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
Fine I'll remove it. I can understand your anger.mimicx35 6806
I just noticed that Villains is spelled wrong on the links at the top. You know, where it says "Main Page, Heroes, 'Villians', Teams, etc." I only noticed because I copied that spelling in my Mad Thinker profile, because I'm not very good at spelling villain, and someone nicely corrected it for me. PseudoSherlock 13:52, 9 June 2006 (EDT)
Its been pointed out before, and Pete's aware, afaik, but he hasn't had time to get round to fixing it yet. Stuart Vandal 07:15, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
Sice Mike wrote the requirements for the categories: "The Heroes category includes characters only from the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616) to prevent an overload of all the various characters' incarnations from alternate universe stories.". sononsj 22:57, 12 June 2006 (EDT)
Stuart read the category requirements for heroes that it looks like Eric posted. I was following the guidelines that were in print. It's there. -- IRISH4869 04:33, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
Understood. Both you and Dragynwulf should hold off adding / removing categories for the non-616 types for the moment, as the mods are currently debating this, since we aren't in agreement as to whether non-616 types should be included. Stuart Vandal 07:15, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
I didn't see the requirements for the Heroes category until IRISH pointed it out. But there are no requirements for the Reformed Villains and Deceased categories. And since we are on the subject of categories. Why does is the category of Squadron Supreme limited to those of that reality when any character that interacts with Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Avengers and other categories can be included under those categories. Characters like Grandmaster, Avengers, Squadron Sinister are important characters in the Squadron Supreme's history. --DragynWulf 10:55, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
I like how you casually ignored this post til AFTER you made the changes you were told not to Dragynwulf. Stuart does he have special Steven Segall priveleges where he can just do things without getting chewed out? I get chastised by the mods all the time. Where's the equality???? I want justice. I want the truth. I want a klondike bar. But seriously, you can't give this guy a free pass. Also the Squadron Sinister are NOT important to the Squadron Supreme. It's a footnote if anything and it's barely that. I'm cool with the Grandmaster who appeared with the Squadron Supreme in ONE panel in flashback. And I NEVER objected to the Avengers or the Defenders being put on there. I was actually waiting to see if he'd put them there. Which he hasn't. He seems to just be gunning for profiles that I created. It may be incidental, but it might be viewed by some as being an attack. -- IRISH4869 20:30, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
I might have interpreted this the wrong way but, so we're not allowed to use the numbering system set-up by the appendix right? So does that mean we have to make up our own numbers??? Or do I have to check in with the mods every time I make an alternate reality charater who's reality wasn't listed in the Handbook??? And what about realities that aren't listed anywhere?? How do I get the reeality designations for those?? And if Jeff Christansen is a moderator on this site, how come I never see him??? What's his user name??? -- IRISH4869 05:02, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
The numbers on the Appendix are unofficial unless ratified in print in a Marvel title (Handbooks count). Jeff numbers them to keep track of things, and given the Handbooks some of those numbers tend to become official, providing editorial approves them. On this official site, unnumbered realities should be left unnumbered, unless and until they get an official designator. The major realities all have numbers, so its only the minors which don't, and there's little need to create profiles for characters from them most of the time. Jeff is a moderator on this site, but he's also head writer for the Handbooks, so he comes here infrequently. His user name is Jeff Christiansen. Stuart Vandal 07:15, 13 June 2006 (EDT)
Hi Stuart, this is Nancy. Just letting you know that the users mooga and I (nancyw86) are interns here with Peter O. We are working on uploading images for the characters. Please let us know if we make any mistakes or if there's anything we should change. Thanks!
I really don't want to be a bother, but my profile of Nextwave says "This article has been created, but not approved, please check back later" I understood that at first, cause of course you don't have time to look at every profile, being busy with the Handbooks and all. But it's been almost 2 months and it's still like that, I wish you could look at it and delete it or something if it's not good, because I wanted to update it and I saw that my updates don't register anywhere considering it is like that. Thanks for your time, because I know it's precious. sL33py 23:30, 4 July 2006 (GMT)
I got the information about Thunderclap from both the Wikipedia and Marvel Appendix websites. Is there any other way I could get information about the character? Possibly have it approved this time?
I just want to apolagize regarding my Technet biography. Years ago I had made/translated a profile for them in Dutch for my own fan site, but nowadays I couldn't remember íf I had used any original English source for it and, if so, from which site. So I translated my Dutch profile (back) to English. I'm sorry, it was not my intention to plagiarize. In the future when I'm editing a team profile again, I will better check my used information.
Understood, and apology accepted. Stuart Vandal 18:17, 30 October 2006 (CST)
Long time no talk... I just was curious, now that you have had a really good chance to do some work here at Marvel.com, how do you find it?
I am mostly referring to differences in policy and in the number of instances of plagiarism and copying from Wikipedia, etc. Have you found easier ways to deal with these (and other) issues that you used to see at the MDP?
I often liked to pick your brain and I guess I am hoping to do that again. Any new practices or procedures that you think might be helpful would be greatly appreciated.
"now that you have had a really good chance to do some work here at Marvel.com, how do you find it?" Good, though I simply don't have the time I would like to devote to helping the site expand. Spotting and removing poorly done profiles is quick and easy to do; vetting decent ones takes much more time, and I don't get to do it as much as I'd like; writing my own is just something I never really have time to do. I know most of the other Handbook-originated moderators have similar problems. Which is why its good we are gradually getting some solid contributors and moderators who don't have that time issue.
"I am mostly referring to differences in policy and in the number of instances of plagiarism and copying from Wikipedia, etc. Have you found easier ways to deal with these (and other) issues that you used to see at the MDP?" You just have to be diligent and vigilant. Many people just haven't learned the netequitte, and a simple explanation to not plagiarise (or lift images - no, its not illegal, but it is incredibly rude. I know neither Wikipedia or the Marvel Database have a problem with it, but believe me, every reference site which actually sources and scans its own images does, and I won't support sites which have such inconsiderate attitudes to other reference sites. If you stop allowing it on the Database, then I'll support the Database again). When someone's a regular plagiarist, knows its not allowed but keeps doing it in spite of warnings not to, then they soon get tired because we get to know them and just never approve them. Google searches of random phrases within the text of a new profile; if its been plagiarised, that will often bring up the site it has come from. More subtle plagiarist will rearrange the odd word or phrase to make it less easy to find this way, but most non-Wiki sites have a "house style" to how they lay out their entries, and you soon get good at recognising it after a while. Stuart Vandal 18:17, 30 October 2006 (CST)
The 3-D Man bio we have seems to be a word-for-word copy of the wikipedia entry. cactusrob 16:26, 12 November 2006 (CST)
Thanks for the heads up. However, if you check the Wikipedia entry history, you will see that most of the text there was added by one "Ashantewarrior" on 5th June 2006. I remember this sites 3-D Man bio and contributed to back when this site was newly set up, back in April / May. So in fact, Wikipedia has copied our bio, not the other way around. Stuart Vandal 18:38, 12 November 2006 (CST)
Hey Stuart, I noticed that you deleted all the plagiarized images from Galactico 13, but left the bio profile posts, which came from other sites too. Most of them come from the Wikipedia sites. Wezqu and myself have asked him to stop copying and pasting bios from the other sites. My question is are you going to delete them as well? --ohitsme 07:46, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
I hadn't realised he'd plagiarised entries from other sites. If someone else hasn't already done so, I will delete them. Please make the moderators aware if he continues to ignore instructions not to plagiarise, as we will ask for a banning in such a case. Stuart Vandal 17:33, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
Thanks for the heads-up. I've removed it. Stuart Vandal 12:35, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
Hey Stuart, could you please remove the extra oblivion images that I posted trying to corrected them. Oh, and by the way I see you remove a bunch of profiles and images today, but you missed the Judas Traveler one. --ohitsme 13:12, 23 March 2008 (CDT)
At the moment these characters have three different bios about them. The original tow separate bios Lord Chaos, Master Order and Master Order & Lord Chaos. Is the third really needed as they are two characters and the characters should be listed in their own bios. Just wanted to show this to some moderator so it can be corrected. Just to point out that the nevest of those bios is the one that has both characters in it. --Wezqu 21:53, 23 March 2008 (EDT)
Hey guys, I think that if you are saying that because they are two separate characters that they should in-fact have two separate bios. Lord Chaos and Master Order for the most part act in unison. it is for that reason that both the separate bios have the same exact information. In the old handbooks they were listed as two separate entities, but apparently someone realized this and made a correction, because the new handbook list them together. I thought that I should mention this. --ohitsme 22:08, 23 March 2008 (CDT)
In handbooks we sometimes combine entries for characters who always appear together, but that's more down to space restrictions than anything else. I'd change the combined entry to a links page, leading to the two individual pages. Stuart Vandal 12:35, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
I just noticed that as Bastion was created by combining two different characters. At the moment all three has their own bios on the site. So I just wanted to ask should they all have their own bios or should those two characters histories that he was combined from be listed on the Bastion page as Bastion is both of them? I ask this from you as you seem to be the most active moderator that I have seen on the site for a while and hope you have time to answer. --Wezqu 18:15, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
