Laurie Collins grew up living with her mother having never known her father, a mutant with similar abilities named Sean Garrison, Collins began to involuntarily manipulate anyone around her once her genetic mutation manifested, unable to control its effects. At the Xavier Institute, Collins found a friend in fellow student Sofia Mantega, a.k.a. Wind Dancer, who was able to resist Collins' powers with her own wind-manipulating ability. Eventually, Collins and Mantega became members of the Institute's New Mutants training squad. When she discovered that her teammate and boyfriend Josh Foley, a.k.a. Elixir, was cheating on her, Collins began to intentionally influence other students with her abilities, which earned their distrust.

Following the advent of "M-Day", Laurie was one of the remaining mutants who retained their powers. Kevin Ford, however, believed his powers were gone, and grabbed Laurie's arm in celebration. Unfortunately, he was wrong, and Laurie's arm shriveled. Even Elixir's powers could not restore her, though it did seem to bring Laurie closer to Josh. Laurie was obviously excluded from training activities for this period. Then, after the human ex-students's bus was bombed, Laurie was speaking with Josh, trying to find out why he was so angry, and she was shot in the head by a Purifier sniper working for Reverend Stryker.

Recently, Laurie resurfaced as a bio-sentinel.
