The son of primordial sea Titans Oceanus and Tethys, Achelous was chief river god. Circa1260 BC, he traveled to Claydon to seek the hand of the mortal Deianira, the beautiful daughter of King Oeneus and Queen Althea. Finding that Deianira was also pursued by and preferred Hercules, Achelous challenged him for Deianira's hand in marriage. The battle ended when Achelous transformed into a bull and charged Hercules, who avoided the attack and shattered Achelous' right horn. His enmity towards Hercules intensifying in the ensuing centuries, Achelous entered the service of Hercules' estranged cousin and bitter rival Eurystheus in recent years.
