Though his family relationships vary among accounts, Ba'al was of the Annunaki, and was worshiped as far back as 18,000 BC by peoples such as the Archeronians, Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians. When the dragon Tiamat led a civil war amongst the Annunaki, Ba'al was aided by the sea god Ea in an attempt to usurped the throne of Dagon (who had succeed Anu as ruler).
