Living opulently in a cavern beneath Nornheim's forbidding surface, Karnilla has few gods and goddesses among her subjects.  She keeps only a few exiled dwarfs and enthralled barbarics (giants) as her servants.  Her relationship to the goddesses of destiny is unknown, although they clearly are beyond her jurisdiction.  While most Asgardians view Karnilla as a figure of evil, she sees her deeds as just and necessary.

Karnilla has befriended Loki, god of evil, and has fell in love with a noble warrior of Asgard named Balder the Brave, but she has been seen as an enemy to Asgard for her past deeds. Later, though, Balder requested that Asgard form an alliance with Karnilla in the war with Surtur. While Balder was called away to help Thor in his mission to rescue souls from Hel, Karnilla was taken captive by the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, transforming Karnilla's subjects into stone. Balder came through rescuing Karnilla and helping to stop the Frost Giants invasion on Asgard.
