The Mawkaw magkongs (commonly known as the "lava monsters") were not discovered until very late in Sakaar's history. As its name implies, the Mawkaw magkong lives only within the hellish depths of the Mawkaw Mountains' remote volcano caverns. First discovered in the year 515 Post by soldiers of the newly formed Imperial Empire who were exploring the Mawkaw's volcanoes in search of a new base of operations in their war against the Spikes, the territorial magkongs incinerated any soldiers foolish enough to venture too close to the subterranean magma rivers.

Although Imperial scientist have been unable to thoroughly study a living magkong specimen, it is believed the creatures are enormous lava monsters, unicellular organisms lacking any sort of spine or central nervous system and consisting solely of a large cell nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm. It is the fireproof plasma membrane that allows the magkongs to survive in their magma environment and gives them their burning appearance. Despite that fact the Magkongs were discovered prior to the appearance of the Great Portal, some Sakaarian scientists still maintain that the magkongs originated off-planet due to their dissimilarity with any known species on Sakaar; however these scientist offer no explanation as to how the magkongs would have arrived on Sakaar. The Empire usually feeds disobedient gladiators and slaves to the magkongs as a form of punishment.

The Imperial guardsman known as Yenrag had witnessed the Father Emperor tear out the burning heart of a Mawkaw Magkong. While in a battle with the Imperial forces above the Mawkaw Mountains, the Green Scar gets on a hover vehicle with Caiera and Korg but the vehicle is hit by one of the Imperial soldiers and they all fall out, down towards the lava. The Hulk saves Caiera by landing in the lava first and catching her. Suddenly a Mawkaw Magkong, also known as a lava monster, comes out of the lava and actually pushes the Hulk and Caiera into the sky, out of their territory.
