After having several nightmares about the Kree Supreme Intelligence, Rick Jones contacts Captain America for help. Whilst meeting they are attacked by the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, and Rick is kidnapped.

Fearing for the worst, Captain America calls in the Avengers West Coast. After a brief battle with several members of the Imperial Guard and a Kree Sentry, the team finds out that the Shi'ar and Kree are at war.

Quasar soon discovers that the two empires are using the Solar System as a star gate, which is destabilizing the sun. The Avengers decide to try and stop the war by approaching both empires and negotiating.

Captain America splits the heroes into three groups:

Team Earth: Wasp, Henry Pym, Falcon, Gilgamesh, Mockingbird, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman and USAgent.

Team Kree: Captain America, Black Knight, Crystal, Hercules, Iron Man, Sersi, and HawkeyeUSAgent.

Team Shi’ar: Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Living Lightning, Starfox, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Vision, and Wonder Man.

Annoyed at being left behind on Earth, Hawkeye ingests some Pym Particles and assumes the guise of Goliath. Captain America replaces USAgent with Goliath on Team Kree.

Soon after, the Shi’ar raid a Kree site on Earth as well as Captain Marvel’s tomb, stealing pieces of Kree technology to build a weapon of mass destruction: the Nega-Bomb. Despite the efforts of Wonder man and the Vision, the bomb is delivered to Kree space.

Meanwhile the tensions between the Shi'ar and Kree are heightened when the Shi'ar princess Deathbird murders the Kree leaders Ael-Dan and Dar-Ben, again despite the best efforts of the the Avengers. The organic computer Kree Supreme Intelligence assumes sole leadership of the Empire.

Eventually the Avengers managed to establish contact with the Shi'ar leadership and negotiate an end to the war. The negotiations are soon rendered moot, however, as several Skrulls steal and detonate the Nega-Bomb and destroy the majority of the Kree Empire; the Shi’ar annex the remnant of the empire.

The Avengers later discover that the Kree Supreme Intelligence had planned the whole war, including the near-genocide of the Kree. Upon discovery of this knowledge, Iron Man leads Hercules, Vision, Black Knight, Wonder Man, Sersi and Thor on a rogue mission to execute the Intelligence. The apparent success of this mission causes considerable tension within the larger team and leads to the near-resignation of Cap from the Avengers.
