Following the Onslaught Saga, a growth of mistrust between the mutant and human communities rose quickly. What tipped the scale of mistrust over was the assassination of Graydon Creed, a candidate for the presidential election (also an mutant-hater), by what was supposedly an energy blast. As a result, the U.S. government gave full permission to Bastion and his Sentinels to exterminate the mutants as a campaign.
The Sentinels were able to seize control on some of the X-Men as well as the Xavier Institute For Higher Learning.
