The base layer (the layer that is against his skin) is woven combination of a 15% polyester/5% cotton/40% Kevlar/40% Nomex threads. The combination of the polyester and cotton make for a somewhat stretchable garment that does not readily absorb large amounts of moisture, leaving such things as perspiration to pass from Punisher’s skin, through the garment, allowing it to breathe (as well as keeping him relatively warmer in colder climates, and cooler in hotter ones, as the sweat buildup does not contribute to the possible significant skin temperature increases and drops). The Kevlar weave increases the strength and durability of the garment, giving it “rip-stop” capabilities, as well as providing protection from abrasion-related injuries. The Nomex-Kevlar gives Punisher’s battlesuit significant resistance to heat and open flame. The torso (shirt) of Punisher’s battlesuit is especially thickened, having several layers of Kevlar bonded to them, rendering it bullet-resistant and considered Type IIIA body armor, by DoJ (Department of Justice) ratings. This means that the Punisher’s battlesuit shirt will protect him from 9mm FMJ-RN (Full Metal Jacket, Round Nose) rounds, with nominal masses of 8 grams (124 grains), at reference velocities of 436 meters/second (1430 feet/second +/- 30 feet/second). It will also stop .44 magnum SJHP (semi-jacketed hollow-point) rounds with nominal masses of 15.6 grams (240 grains) at a reference velocity of 436 meters/second (1,430 feet/second, +/- 30 feet/second). This is sufficient to protect his vital organs against most handgun threats, as well as the threats covered by types I, IIA and II body armors. The Kevlar layers have alternating layers of padding between them, in order to help attenuate the shocks of bullet impacts. The chest and back of Punisher’s shirt contains pockets for special “trauma plates”, which further enhances protection from gunfire. These plates are ceramic-based composite armor pieces, elevating the protective value from Level IIIA to Level IV, protecting Punisher from .30 caliber AP (armor-piercing) rounds with nominal masses of 10.8 grams (166 grains), striking at minimum velocities of 869 meters/second (2,850 feet/second), or less. These trauma plates will survive approximately 4-5 strikes, before breaking, and that will still leave the layers of Kevlar to protect the body. Not the entirety of the shirt has the multiple layers; it is roughly shaped like a vest, leaving the arms outside of the protected areas. Naturally, inserting the plates in the front &/or back increases the weight of the shirt to approximately 17 pounds. Often, Punisher would not insert the back plates, and only use the front for the trauma inserts, unless expecting extreme resistance, from extremely large numbers of armed opponents. Though Punisher is certainly strong enough to bear the weight, the weight and heat generated were undesirable, and often avoided, whenever feasible. Punisher’s gloves were Kevlar gloves, with a soft lining, suitable for handling hot objects, as well as resistant to cuts, abrasions and some sharp object penetration. The inner hand areas had special dotting materials, improving grip surety. Punisher also employs a more “standard” bulletproof vest, identical to the specifications of his shirt, and capable of going over his armored shirt, even if the shirt has all front and back trauma plates in place. In recent years, Punisher has worn the battlesuit less, cutting back to only the shirt (and still only occasionally wearing the back trauma plates). Also, he has worn conventional t-shirts that are not made of any special materials, but are worn under the outer tactical vest. Punisher has learned how to construct these garments, himself, after raiding Stark Industries storehouses to acquire materials, and closely examining the products, themselves. He can purchase the materials on the open market, as well, from cash taken from criminals he’s killed.Punisher has also acquired other U.S.M.C. (United States Marine Corps) and U.S.A. (United States Army) equipment, including Improved Outer Tactical Vests, PAGST and ACH Kevlar combat helmets, etc.
Shortly after a tour in Vietnam, Castle, his wife, Maria and their children were in New York's Central Park for an afternoon picnic when they witnessed a Mafia gangland execution; an informant had been hanged from a tree. Seeking to eliminate all witnesses, the Costa crime family murdered them on the spot. However, Castle survived. Even though Frank was able to identify all of the shooters the police were unable to help Castle in his quest for justice; they were tied in too deeply to the powerful Costa family. He decided that the only punishment criminals might receive is that of physical destruction. Shortly thereafter, he emblazoned his body armor with a symbol of a death's head, and exacted his revenge. Since then he has waged a one-man war upon crime, taking the name Punisher.Spider-Man and Daredevil. These encounters have often resulted in his incarceration. While he is known to be significantly inferior to Daredevil in hand-to-hand combat skills, Punisher has been rated as one of the most dangerous criminals alive. When he was incarcerated in New York's Riker's Island Prison, though heavily outnumbered in gang-fights, Punisher has routinely killed armed, homicidal criminals with frightening ease, sustaining no injury. Due to his proficiency in fighting, he is rarely so accosted in prison environments. Adhering to his military philosophies, Punisher is constantly training whenever he is not out on actual maneuvers. He exercises fanatically to maintain his impressive physical conditioning and sticks to a balanced diet whenever possible.
