The Yakuza traces its earliest roots back to the familial samurai clans of ancient Japan, founded to protect their members from those who would oppress or exploit them. Clan Yashida is perhaps the oldest and well known of the familial clans. The ancestral seat of Clan Yashida is in Miyago Prefecture, roughly 300 kilometers north of Toyko, nestled in the hill above the port city of Agrashima on the main Japanese island of Honshu. Just prior to the first millennium, demonic elementals began imparting arcane knowledge to Clan Yashida's sages and mystics, convincing them to open a portal to Hell so they could summon the Doombringer (a demon who would end life on earth and allow them to become supreme rulers of Hell).
