Doctor Strange's Asgardian Adventures

As Doctor Strange attempts to become Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, revisit some of his previous adventures with Thor, Loki, and Valkyrie.

To save the world from the ultimate vampire attack, Doctor Strange surrendered his title as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom in BLOOD HUNT (2024). Since then, Doom has used his mastery of science, magic, and political power to reshape the world in his image for ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM (2025). Now, Doctor Strange is making plans to get his old title back, and they start with him becoming the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard in DOCTOR STRANGE OF ASGARD (2025) #1 by Derek Landy, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Cory Petit

As Earth’s former Sorcerer Supreme starts his next journey, let’s take a look back at Doctor Strange’s history with Asgard. From his early adventures with Thor to his history with Loki, this is how the Master of the Mystic Arts proved himself to be one of Asgard’s greatest allies and champions.

HOW DOCTOR STRANGE MET LOKI

Before Doctor Strange met Thor, he fought Loki in a STRANGE TALES (1951) #123 story by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. As part of his continuing efforts to control Thor’s hammer, Loki approached Strange and tricked him into thinking he was the God of Thunder’s prisoner. Strange cast a spell to keep Mjolnir away from Thor, but he quickly realized Loki was the true villain.

After canceling the spell, Strange fought Loki in a mystical duel. Loki overpowered Strange, but the trickster ran away when he realized Thor was flying towards the Sanctum Sanctorum. Since Loki was gone, Thor flew by Doctor Strange’s home without realizing he got help from the Master of the Mystic Arts.

HOW DOCTOR STRANGE MET THOR

Doctor Strange and Thor came face-to-face for the first time in a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (1952) #108 story by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. After falling ill to a mystical spell, Doctor Strange telepathically called out Thor as he flew by the Sanctum Sanctorum. Thor transformed into his human persona, Doctor Donald Blake, and used his mystical knowledge to tend to Strange.

Shortly after that, Loki stole Mjolnir, which had been disguised as Blake’s cane. Doctor Strange helped Thor locate the cane, but only after someone had found and used it as a fishing pole. With his astral form, Strange scared the man into giving it to Doctor Blake. Then, when Loki tried to kill Jane Foster in limbo, Strange protected her from afar with a mystical amulet as Thor prepared to defeat the God of Mischief.

DOCTOR STRANGE VS. THE FROST GIANTS

For his first meeting with the Avengers, Doctor Strange took on two of Asgard’s most dangerous foes in AVENGERS (1963) #61 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. Following an adventure with the Black Knight (Dane Whitman) left the Avenger injured, Strange asked the team for help. As Strange tended to the Black Knight at the Avengers’ base, Ymir the Frost Giant attacked Wakanda, and Surtur the Fire Giant attacked Antarctica.

As the Avengers dealt with these simultaneous threats, Strange used the Crystal of Conquest to repair the damage from their attacks and cast a spell to send them off-world. Just as both giants prepared their ultimate attacks, Strange teleported Ymir to Antarctica, and the giants took each other out instead. With this victory, Strange proved he was just as capable as Thor in dealing with Asgard’s enemies.

STRANGE AND VALKYRIE

While Doctor Strange and Thor have teamed up plenty of times, the Master of the Mystic Arts has spent even more time with another Asgardian: Valkyrie (Brunnhilde). An ancient Asgardian warrior, Valkyrie found herself imprisoned by the Enchantress, who pushed Valkyrie’s spirit into the body of an unconscious human woman named Barbara Denton in DEFENDERS (1972) #4 by Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema

The Defenders, Enchantress, and Valkyrie ended up working together to defeat the Asgardian sorceress Casiolena, and Brunnhilde claimed the Asgardian steed Aragorn for herself. Back on Earth, Valkyrie joined Strange and his teammates in the Defenders, and she went on to become one of the team’s longest-serving members.

THOR AND STRANGE VS. DRACULA

Even though Thor is the God of Thunder, Doctor Strange is better equipped to deal with some supernatural problems. As such, Thor approached Strange for help finding the Runestaff of Kamo Tharnn—a mystical object he wanted to use to restore an ailing Jane Foster—in THOR (1966) #333 by Alan Zelenetz and Mark Bright

Thor allowed Strange to scan his mind as a sign of ultimate trust. But when the Sorcerer Supreme scanned Sif’s mind, he realized the Asgardian warrior had fallen under the sway of Dracula, who had consumed some of her divine blood. After Thor battled Dracula to save Sif, Strange telepathically told Thor he could finish off the weakened vampire, which allowed Thor and Sif to start their quest to retrieve the rune from deep space.

DOCTOR STRANGE, THOR’S EXORCIST

When Thor wasn’t feeling well, he called his doctor in THOR (1966) #413 by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. After experiencing several strange moments of weakness, Thor visited Doctor Strange with Hercules to figure out what was wrong with him.

Strange and Thor traveled into the deep recesses of Thor’s mind, where they encountered an aggressive, armored version of the Thunder God. As they battled the imposter, the vision transformed into Loki, who had left part of his soul within Thor after lending him some of his power. While Hercules kept the troll Ulik from harming their bodies in the real world, Strange helped Thor exorcise his brother’s spirit, which had caused his medical problems.

DOCTOR STRANGE REBUILDS MJOLNIR

Mjolnir was once partially destroyed in a brutal battle between the God of Thunder and Bor, his rampaging grandfather. To save the spirit of Sif from remaining trapped inside of a dying human woman, Thor needed a quick fix for his hammer, and he brought it to Doctor Strange in THOR (2007) #602 by J. Michael Straczynski and Marko Djurdjevic

Although Strange told Thor he could repair the hammer, he warned Thor it would drain him of the lingering Odinforce within his body and that Thor would die if the hammer was damaged. When Thor accepted those conditions, Strange called on the forces of creation to transfer the Odinforce into Mjolnir, which Thor immediately used to free Sif from her mortal prison.

LOKI: SORCERER SUPREME

During one of his more noble periods, Loki briefly replaced Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme. In DOCTOR STRANGE (2015) #381 by Donny Cates and Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Loki tricked Strange into surrendering his mystical possessions, since he believed Strange wasn’t capable of repairing Earth’s ailing magic.

Unaware of Loki’s true motives, Strange teamed up with Wong and the Sentry to stop him. In order to do so, he stole a piece of Yggdrasill, the World Tree, which briefly made him the God of Magic. After Loki restored Earth’s magic with a powerful spell, he and Strange worked together to stop the Void, the Sentry’s dark persona. Loki ultimately revealed everything to Strange, who punched the god, teleported him elsewhere, and reclaimed the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme.

DOCTOR STRANGE’S FORGE

From Mjolnir to Stormbreaker, some of Asgard’s most powerful weapons have been forged by dwarves in the furnaces of Nidavellir, where Doctor Strange also briefly established a base. While traveling through space to restore his mystical abilities, Strange befriended a dwarf named Eoffren in DOCTOR STRANGE (2018) #4 by Mark Waid and Jesus Saiz. After asking Strange why he didn’t build his own mystical weapons, Eoffren brought the Master of the Mystic Arts to the Forge in Nidavellir.

In a nod to his history as a doctor, Strange forged a mystical blade called the Scalpel of Strange. Over his next several adventures, Strange and his allies regularly returned to the forge, which became known as the Sanctum Machina. However, Madame Masque eventually found Strange’s forge and used the mystical resources there for her own nefarious purposes.

DOCTOR STRANGE: ASGARD’S SORCERER SUPREME

After numerous adventures with Thor and the other Asgardians, Doctor Strange wants to become Asgard’s first Sorcerer Supreme in DOCTOR STRANGE OF ASGARD (2025) #1. With Doctor Doom having total control over Earth and its magic, Strange turned to his old friend Thor and got permission to carry out his mission.

As Strange started to find his place in Asgard, Thor directed him to Hulda, a sorceress and Asgard’s resident mystical expert. Once he returned the piece of Yggdrasill he borrowed during his time as the God of Magic, Hulda seemed open to the idea of Strange wielding Asgardian magic, and the Avenger even got a surprising endorsement from Loki. But even as he prepares to let Asgard’s magic flow through him, Strange already faces unexpected challenges in his new mystical kingdom.
