First Look at the Cover to ‘Timeless Light’ #1: Mike McKone Showcases the God of Mischief Alongside the Avengers
We spoke to the artist about his favorite versions of Loki, the character’s core traits, comic tales from Asgard, and more.
Artist Mike McKone (CAPTAIN MARVEL: DARK TEMPEST, WEREWOLF BY NIGHT) depicts Loki, surrounded by the Avengers, on the cover of recently-dropped comic TIMELESS LIGHT #1. And for the artist, his love of Asgard's God of Mischief comes down to one classic Marvel Comics creator: “I like anything created or designed by Jack Kirby. So drawing Loki is always fun.”
TIMELESS LIGHT #1, sponsored by Citizen, is a full-length original comic by Paul Allor, Carlos Reno, and Larry Molinar where Loki reflects on what makes heroes, well, heroic. But as New York City is engulfed in an onslaught of “Shadow Monsters,” Loki seizes the opportunity to confront the Avengers instead. Being cut from the same darkness as these invading demons, Loki easily controls the Shadow Monsters and wields them against Earth’s Mightiest. After all, how else is a god to stake his claim in the perpetual battle between light and dark?
“[Loki’s] pomposity and self-aggrandizing nature should [always] be present,” reflects McKone on his cover depiction of Loki from TIMELESS LIGHT. “As well as his natural mischievousness.”
Some of the artist’s reference points also tie back to his favorite Thor/Loki stories. “The Walt Simonson THOR run from the 80s is rightfully regarded as a high point,” McKone says. “And I also have a lot of affection for the issues illustrated by John Buscema from a decade earlier.”
And when it comes down to which Loki, out of many, is his favorite to draw?
“I think classic Loki is my favorite iteration.”
