Rogue and Gambit’s Greatest Hits

Relive a few of Rogue and Gambit's best moments as a couple before they swing into their new series by Stephanie Phillips and Carlos Gomez this Wednesday.

Even by comic book standards, the X-Men’s Gambit and Rogue share a truly unique romance. While the duo has experienced some ups and downs over the years, their recent marriage has them fitting together like shrimp and grits. Now, with the couple heading out on another mission in ROGUE & GAMBIT, we’re celebrating their a few of greatest hits together.

The Pie Incident

During a team picnic in X-MEN (1991) #8, Gambit and Rogue went off on their own, but—just as their flirtation reached peak levels—Bishop arrived to pick a fight with Gambit. During the scuffle, Gambit threw a boysenberry pie at Bishop. He missed and hit Rogue, who definitely did not appreciate being on the receiving end of a pie-to-the-face gag. The funny moment soon turned into a sweet one, though, when Rogue emphasized the importance of the here and now.

A First Kiss at the End of the World

Rogue’s mutant ability, which causes her to absorb the powers of those she touches, has affected her relationship with Gambit in a lot of key ways. In fact, their first kiss didn’t happen for quite some time because she feared any physical contact would leave him comatose.

However, that changed when David Haller, AKA Legion, accidentally murdered his father Charles Xavier, ushering in the AGE OF APOCALYPSE timeline in X-MEN (1991) #41. As the world collapsed around them, Rogue and Gambit kissed for the first time. There is, quite possibly, nothing more epic than a potentially debilitating kiss at the end of the world.

Rogue Gets X-Tremely Stabbed Saving Gambit

In X-TREME X-MEN (2001) #15, Gambit became the conduit for an alien invasion by the villainous Khan. After getting captured, Gambit decided to sacrifice himself to stop the invasion. However, Rogue had other ideas and set out to save him.

In the end, the invasion was thwarted and Rogue prevented Gambit’s death, but they were left without their powers. Still, their struggle against such a catastrophe represented a great moment in their relationship, showing just how far the two stubborn heroes are willing to go for each other.

Rogue and Gambit, Back Together at Last

X-MEN LEGACY (2008) #220 kicked off the “Salvage” storyline, which represented another major turning point in Rogue and Gambit’s relationship. At the start of the arc, Gambit and Rogue were broken up again, but that changed when Charles Xavier recruited Gambit to help him find Rogue. The search led them to Australia, where they found her.

Almost immediately, the group was forced to take on Danger. During that conflict, Xavier learned how to remove the blocks preventing Rogue from controlling her abilities properly. After they defeated Danger, Rogue realized she had some measure of control over her powers—and naturally, the first thing she did was kiss Gambit!

Rogue and Gambit Vs. Trust Issues

After spending decades as a lovably dysfunctional on-again, off-again couple, ROGUE & GAMBIT (2018) sent the two to infiltrate a resort in search of some missing mutants. However, the true villain turned out to be intimacy issues. While there, they received couples therapy, which helped them work through their trust issues and open up more. As a result, they worked more effectively and efficiently together than ever before.

Gambit Steals a Wedding Day

Although X-MEN: GOLD (2017) #30 billed itself as the wedding day of Kitty Pryde and Piotr “Colossus” Rasputin, they’re not the couple who ended up getting married. Instead, after Pryde left Colossus at the altar, Gambit got an idea: what if he and Rogue tied the knot instead? The two subsequently exchanged vows, cementing that—while their relationship is tumultuous at times—they would always return to one another in the end.

The Most Heroic Honeymoon Ever

Following their whirlwind wedding, Rogue and Gambit decided to go on a honeymoon. Ever the untraditional couple, they selected space as their dream destination. While there, their vacation was interrupted by a mission that brought them to the Shi’ar Empire and pit them against a ton of fierce foes. Now a married couple, MR. AND MRS. X (2018) proved their marriage would be an exciting one.

For their next adventure together, the titular couple will be working with the precognitive Destiny in ROGUE & GAMBIT (2023) #1 by Stephanie Phillips and Carlos Gomez, which hits shelves this Wednesday, March 1!
