What Is 'Strange Academy'?

This week on Marvel Unlimited. The world of magic has changed in such an alarming way that Doctor Strange has done what he’s avoided for decades—he’s opened a school for young sorcerers. Enter the STRANGE ACADEMY by Skottie Young, Humberto Ramos, and Edgar Delgado. A group of young people from around the world with aptitude in magic have been brought together in New Orleans to study the Mystic Arts under Strange, Doctor Voodoo, the Ancient One, Scarlet Witch, Magik, Hellstorm, and even more Marvel mages. But before everyone can get that first day syllabus, will several mystical threats converge to give these kids a crash course?

Meet Strange Academy’s magically inclined students, and their teachers, below.

THE STUDENTS

Emily Bright

Emily Bright has been gifted with immense magical power that she’s had since she was a baby. She’s even been able to hold death itself at bay. However, Emily’s formidable abilities have also made her a target. Emily has enrolled in Strange Academy to understand her gifts but also for her own protection.

Shaylee Moonpeddle

A bright and exuberant student, Shaylee hails from Otherworld and she loves to make new friends. Shaylee is a rare human and fairy hybrid, which has caused her family to make sacrifices in order to allow Shaylee to remain with her own kind.

Doyle Dormammu

Doyle is the son of Doctor Strange’s archenemy the Dread Dormammu! The family resemblance is uncanny, and Doyle clearly takes after his father in terms of power. But whose example will Doyle ultimately follow—Strange’s or Dormammu’s? An impressionable Doyle still has a long way to grow.

Iric and Alvi

Hailing from Asgard, twin brothers Iric and Alvi are magically gifted, but they are far removed from the inner circle of the mighty Thor, Sif, and the Warriors Three. On Asgard, Iric and Alvi may simply be among the crowd of gods, but on Earth they will be able to forge their own legend.

Guslaug

Easily the biggest student at Strange Academy, Guslaug is a Frost Giant from Jotunheim. Loki was crowned king of the Frost Giants after WAR OF THE REALMS, and he has taken an interest in Guslaug’s abilities. Guslaug must be very special indeed if Loki is personally making the arrangements for him to attend Strange Academy. Or this may just be the latest streak of fun from the God of Mischief.

Zoe Laveau

In the Marvel Universe, Marie Laveau is a Voodoo priestess who trained Doctor Voodoo and fought Doctor Strange! Zoe Laveau seems to have some of her great-great-grandmother’s talents, but we hope she won’t try and kill Stephen Strange as many times.

Calvin Morse

Calvin Morse is a passionate student who was super stoked to find an enchanted leather jacket that granted him admission to the Strange Academy. As this school is a huge step up from the rough life in foster homes he’s had thus far, Calvin can see nothing but an upside from this opportunity!

Dessy

Although her real name is Despair, she prefers to go by “Dessy” when addressed by her fellow students. Dessy is a demon from Limbo who has the gift/burden to see things as they truly are. She can see all her fellow students’ secrets, but will she share what she knows?

Toth

Toth is not exactly the most loquacious student at Strange Academy. This silent one is a half-Crystal Warrior and half-Man-Thing from Weirdworld.

Germán

Very little is currently known about Germán, but we can say this: he has a special connection to animals!

THE FACULTY

Doctor Strange

Strange Academy may bear Stephen Strange’s name, but he seems to have a largely hands-off approach to the school. Doctor Strange was once a selfish surgeon who only came into his magic after an accident robbed his hands of their previous skills. In DR. STRANGE: SURGEON SUPREME, now on MU, Stephen has attempted to balance his responsibility to the magical world and the medical profession.

Doctor Voodoo

Considering that Doctor Voodoo AKA Jericho Drumm has died more than once, his continued survival is a bit of a miracle. Voodoo was fatally injured in SAVAGE AVENGERS, but Wolverine’s blood saved his life and may have made him immortal. In STRANGE ACADEMY, Voodoo is the principal and runs the school in Strange’s absence. A former Sorceror Supreme, Drumm has a lot of knowledge to share with the students, and hopefully, they can avoid death like their principal!

Zelma Stanton

Prior to meeting Stephen Strange, Zelma was an ordinary librarian in New York City. However, she was forced to seek out Strange’s help when she was inflicted with Mind Maggots. Once she was cured, Zelma decided to stay with Strange as his new apprentice and his librarian. Although a relative novice, Zelma is taking a leading role in STRANGE ACADEMY.

The Ancient One

After years of guiding Doctor Strange, the Ancient One became one with the Earth and his successor became the new Sorcerer Supreme. After returning to the flesh and being robbed of his magic, the Ancient One has been re-teaching himself the ways of magic. Now, the Ancient One has returned to pass his learning to a new generation of students.

Mindful One

Once, Mindful One was simply one of Dormammu’s servants. Fortunately, Sir Isaac Newton saw the potential to transform Mindful One into something more. Mindful One made his debut in DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE SORCERERS SUPREME #1, and Strange took a liking to him. Upon the completion of that adventure, Strange invited Mindful One to stay with him as long as he desired. At Strange Academy, Mindful One is both the Dormitory Resident and the personal chef for the students.

Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff has long been one of Marvel’s most powerful witches. During HOUSE OF M, Wanda rewrote reality while suffering a breakdown. Fortunately, Wanda has made a full recovery and resumed her role as the Scarlet Witch. As an Avenger, Wanda was perhaps the most well-known witch in the world. That makes her a bit of a celebrity in the magical realm.

Magik

Illyana Rasputin first learned the ways of magic while trapped in the hellish Limbo under the thumb of demon lord Belasco. Since then she returned to Earth as a New Mutant and X-Man but her demonic past has stuck with her. She also once trained with Doctor Strange by traveling to the past to learn from Strange in his prime. But this training didn’t round off any of her edges, which makes her teaching experience interesting and dangerous.

Hellstorm AKA Daimon Hellstrom

Daimon Hellstrom may be known as the Son of Satan, but his history is a bit more complex than that. Hellstrom’s father is a demon, and Daimon has also gone down a dark path at times. But that also makes Hellstrom an ideal mentor for the next generation… if he can steer them away from making the same mistakes he did.

Nico Minoru AKA Sister Grimm

As a member of the Runaways and A-Force, Nico has already established herself as one of the most talented magicians in the Marvel Universe. But with the major changes in her life and magic—she learned of the One and the origins of her power in RUNAWAYS #15—will she take the risk of using her magic to help these teens?

Shaman

When he was younger, Michael Twoyoungmen didn’t believe in magic. However, he eventually came to embrace his gifts as Shaman, a trusted member of Canadian super-team Alpha Flight. One of his key assets is a medicine bag that can access a pocket dimension. With that bag, Shaman can call upon almost any magical object that he needs. Shaman’s duties with Alpha Flight may make him a part-timer at Strange Academy, but he has valuable knowledge to pass on.
