New Details Emerge From Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Ride

Last year, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, announced that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was coming to Disney California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort this summer!

Recently, Marvel.com was invited to Disney California Adventure for a sneak peek of the construction site for the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction with Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment, and Joe Rohde, Walt Disney Imagineering Portfolio Creative Executive, as construction is currently underway.

Here’s everything we learned about the fast-paced, high-energy Marvel attraction during this visit:

World-Building/Universe-Expanding
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is an immersive, irreverent high energy ride system that isn’t revisiting Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy” film. It’ll offer new high-dynamic experiences unrelated to the 2014 film, or even, the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” film.

Ride System Narrative + Easter Eggs
Before you even step foot onto the ride system, you’re already immersed in the Guardians of the Galaxy world. The exterior of the fortress displays a “Tivan Collection: First Time on Public Display” marquee which Rocket Raccoon has rearranged the signage to say “Mission: BREAKOUT!”

Riders will make their way to a main room with collections on display; what’s in the vitrine will change over time. However, it will always connect to a larger Marvel universe. Rohde stresses, “it’s a living collection that’s alive and connects to a broader world.” Artifacts will draw from television, film, and other projects to come. True Believers, there will be many surprises for the faithful comics readers. Quesada notes that “Marvel uses the real world as a canvas.”

The Collector will address guest riders on a large screen and state you need security clearance to move through each room of the museum. Once you make it to Tivan’s private office, riders will notice that Rocket has escaped the collection. You’ll be enlisted to scan your human hand print to blow the generator and release the other Guardian members. While Rocket laid out a great plan, he didn’t think of all the cages being released as part of the deal. This is where the fun begins!

Before leaving the maintenance bay, Rocket grabs the Awesome Mix Tape. For the ride system, it’ll be a mixture of songs heard in “Guardians of the Galaxy” as well as new, era-appropriate rock additions. Any given experience (or “ride profile”) on the ride system will be different through various randomized sequences, images and rock song.

Rohde explains, “This is a comedy, action/adventure, prison-break. We invest immediately in movement. Everything that happens on the ride, from the moment you take off, happens in the context of this very physical chaos. It’s insane chaos; but really funny, really fun chaos that ensues for the rest of the ride.” Remember, the Guardians’ breakout requires an inside man — that’s you! Just between us, cast members working the attraction have been embedded as Tivan Group employees.
