Sammael

There are very few known facts about the demon known as Sammael. It was revealed that he resided in an unknown region of Hell and has been engaged in a struggle, which was represented on a chess like table, between the forces of Heaven and Hell for over three decades. He served Satan and his opponent Armaziel served the Angels of Heaven. Sammael restored their board after it had been tampered with by an unnamed minor demon. The demon's unwitting interference with the board triggered the creation of the hell-spawned warrior, Soulfire. Sammael introduced new pieces to replace those that had been deemed unusable and the three decade old game continued.
